About — Molly Miles

I grew up on a farm in a tiny town in South Dakota.

No stoplight, graduating class of 28, more cows than people, tiny...My only complaint was that there were no paved roads near my house, rendering those rollerblades I got for my birthday useless. I was never bored. Plenty of space and all of the time in the world gave me a chance to create my own adventures. It helped me learn crucial life skills like creative thinking, resourcefulness and problem solving.

I worked as a broadcast journalist throughout the midwest until settling in the Twin Cities with my wife and dog.

EMPLOYMENT/EXPERIENCE

McKnight Foundation—Digital Storyteller

(1/18 - Present) I create and oversee the development of web and social media content for the McKnight Foundation. Through visual and human-centered storytelling, I help advance the Foundation’s mission, lift up our grantees, and offer transparency and clarity about our goals and activities.

Minneapolis Police Department—Video and Communications Coordinator

(7/15 - 1/18) I produced high-quality video and photo stories that captured the heroic and progressive work of the department and provided transparency for the community. I oversaw the MPD’s social media channels and news website and was the advisor for the officers on the MPD’s Social Media Team. I also created all of the graphics-related materials for the MPD. In 2017, I was certified through FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute’s Advanced PIO Program.

KETV—Journalist and Photographer

(5/13-7/15) I spent part of my time as a multimedia journalist—often referred to as a one-man-band (shooting, writing, and editing stories on my own), and the other as a photographer working with other reporters. I honed my ability to shoot, write, and edit a captivating story, along with work collaboratively to create a quality product. I was responsible for consistently bringing story ideas to the table, and have mastered the art of “pitching” those ideas to often-apprehensive bosses. I worked hand-in-hand with the community daily, so I built a rapport with everyone from city officials and small business owners, to regular residents and sex-trafficking victims.

KEYC—Multimedia Journalist

(5/11-5/13) As a multimedia journalist in Southern Minnesota, I covered everything from courts and city council, to sports and human-interest pieces. I shot, wrote, and edited multiple stories daily. I grew as a journalist, and even had a package picked up by the CBS Early Show. Covering breaking news, I became a quick and effective decision maker and learned to work well under pressure. I also gained experience as a weekend anchor/producer.

KELO TV—On Air News Reporter Internship

(5/10-9/10) While at KELO-TV I completed over 600 hours in a news reporting internship at the #1-rated television station in SD. I wrote, shot, and edited local news stories (pkg's, explainers, VO/SOTs).

SDSU Information Technology Fellowship

(8/09-5/11) I developed professional-level skills in the design and the implementation of information technology for instructional purpose. I assisted with web page development, provided software and hardware support, and helped faculty incorporate technology into their courses.
